Currently, there are two types of dental implant in use today: Endosteal and Subperiosteal.

Endosteal (in the bone) is the most common used type of implant. This type involves screws, cylinders or blades surgically placed into the jawbone, and is generally used as an alternative for patients with bridges or removable dentures. Each implant holds one or more prosthetic teeth.
Subperiosteal (on the bone) are implants placed on top of the jaw with the metal framework’s posts protruding through the gum to hold the prosthesis. These are used for patients who are unable to wear conventional dentures and who have minimal bone height.

Even though dental implant failure is low, still, there is a small possibility of unsuccessful surgery. Here are some factors contribute to dental failure:
    1. It may cause of poor bone quality or over heating of the bone.
    2. It is also due to incorrect force applied during operation or after the implant. It may also due to contamination of implant and implant site.
    3. It may also cause of rejection of the implant.
    4. Incorrect placement of implant is also another reason.
    5. Smoking is also a factor that cause implant failure.
Don’t be afraid. Dental implant failure is rare. Even if implant of dentures occurs, it can be replaced just recognizing what causes it and how it can avoided.
